Weather Underground explores design strategies that reduce our dependence on petroleum. These can be realized with (recycled) organic materials, post-consumer waste, agricultural by-products and a combination of technology and craft.
According to the International Energy Agency, humanity is facing a “truly global energy crisis”. Prices for natural gas, oil and electricity have reached record highs. At the same time, fossil fuels are becoming increasingly scarce and their extraction is having ever more damaging consequences for the environment. Are there alternatives to generating heat within existing infrastructures such as our own homes without sacrificing warmth and comfort?

With Radiant House, artists Mascha Fehse &#38;amp; Valentina Karga have created an analog heat storage unit in the museum foyer, where both the team and the public can come together to warm up. Together with fashion and product designer Verena Michels, the two artists have invited the public to collectively create a curtain from recycled knitwear in combination with raw sheep's wool during a two-day workshop. This collective curtain has been installed in the Kunstmuseum for the duration of the exhibition as one of the various stations of the Radiant House. Photos:&#38;nbsp;Daniel Sadrowski

With references to the ethics of Philosophers Schweitzer &#38;amp; Meyer-Abich, she drew on the argument that art and culture can be understood as a further area of application of holistic ethics &#38;amp; that a successful life is composed of ethical and creative components.
Verena Michels, founder at Weather Underground, presented her platform Biomaterials in Practice, initiated together with Vlasta Kubušová (cp! studio): a practice-oriented design exhibition focusing on the implementation of new biomaterials, e.g. from fruit waste, algae or mycelium. Culture and cultural production have great potential for sustainable developments. It is crucial that we continue to exchange ideas and try to think things in a new way.

Although there is no pre-cooked solution to solve the waste problem or save humanity, we do believe that design research can have an impact to support systemic change. The exhibition Sorry, we are trying. Biomaterials in Practice investigates themes of sustainable action and brings together organic products, ephemeral materials and functional designs exploring possibilities of new biological production and waste cycles... The repetition of sustainability and climate change topics on various panels and exhibitions can lead to either constructive or evasive discussions. The conversation on Panel 1 is an attempt to talk further about these important topics, approaching them from intersectional, critical and practical perspectives.

 We have enjoyed interesting questions and conversations about biodegradable CAPEBAG and its material and production made in Germany. The bioplastic manudactured for Weather Underground products is based on cornstarch, and so we served them with some Popcorn! On this occasion, CAPEBAG was shown with an installation by designer Andries de Lange.&#38;nbsp;

Plant sequence by Antonia Breme
Designer Verena Michels and artist Antonia Breme combine the best of their respective practices: the artist's tactile displays and the designer’s plant-based product CAPEBAG question the boundaries of art and commerce, attraction and transience and challenge the perception of the virtual and the analog. The window sheds light on the importance of window displays in urban space. It is both a framework and an ambassador for the digitalisation (of retail) driven by lockdowns: Weather Underground’s Webshop is announced within this format ...

Antonia Breme is currently researching intersections between art installation and window display within the context of the Creative Prototyping stipend offered by the Universität der Künste Berlin (UDK).

Verena Michels is a member of OH Studio in Pohlstraße. Her design label Weather Underground was presented in the framework of Pop-Hub during Berlin Art Week 2019. She is now launching her webshop.

Founded by product and fashion designer Verena Michels, Weather Underground reduces petroleum dependency through plant based plastics. CAPEBAG was launched in April 2021. This hybrid of raincape and bag is made of regrowing ressources, 100% biodegradable in a certified timeframe and produced with waterproof, ultrasonic seams in Germany.&#38;nbsp;Weather Underground promotes a mobile lifestyle with aesthetic, functional and ethical qualities, while tackling&#38;nbsp;pollution caused by countless throwaway ponchos. These massproduced items are dropped in natural reservoires or city streets after short rain showers.

Circularity in Practice

	Born out of the idea that a design brand can be extended to a communicative platform, this journal shares current design perspectives with a sustainable innovation focus.

In 2019, when the prototypes of durable, yet biodegradable rainwear were tested, Christian joined Verena’s journey as an external communication consultant. Together, they have encountered innovative and future-oriented concepts, which too often stay in the laboratories or exhibition context. They take a closer look at the barriers and misperceptions related to the circular economy and especially highlight ideas which, despite many challenges, do meet the light of day.

		<description>

	Circularity in Practice!&#38;nbsp;

6 facts on innovative&#38;nbsp; rainwear made in Germany
by Christian Busch

1. What is CAPEBAG and who designed it?
Rainponchos are often petroleum based, unflattering and made for single use. Verena Michels’&#38;nbsp; joyful response is a reusable, repairable, yet biodegradable rain cape - designed, sourced and manufactured in Germany. CAPEBAG is free of toxic additives.

2. What is innovative about CAPEBAG?
Verena Michels researched biodegradable materials and transfered existing ones from agriculture to fashion. The designer conducted extensive research and testing in order to secure a durable, comfortable and sustainable fashion experience. Also, the designer ensured that all production steps together would lead to a non-toxic product which supports Weather Underground’s vision of a waste free future.

3. How is CAPEBAG’s look and feel?
Among others, the soft touch, pleasant smell and low noise level is highlighted by CAPEBAG users. We all know the crackling sound of thin petroleum based rain capes - it’s not the case for CAPEBAG, as its material is 10 times thicker and smoother compared to conventional rain capes.
4.&#38;nbsp;What is CAPEBAG made of?
The water repellant sheets are derived from the agricultural sector. The material is made of cereals and custom produced by a packaging film company in Germany. The sheets are certified OK biodegradable in SOIL and OK compost Industrial (EN13432) - by TÜV Austria.

5. Decomposing but durable - isn’t this conflicting?
CAPEBAG is thick enough for multiple use, yet thin enough to be compostable. The material will show a mild ageing effect over time, but will never decompose while in use. The product can last many seasons or even years, when treated with gentle care. The durability depends on the specific use case (please find examples in the FAQs).

6. How to dispose of CAPEBAG?
Do you really want to dispose of CAPEBAG? Durable, yet biodegradable patches will be delivered with your CAPEBAG - you can repair parts if needed. However, all materials (CAPEBAG &#38;amp; patches) are certified compostable in industrial compost and biodegradable in soil. If applicable in your area, you can dispose of CAPEBAG in the organic waste bin. Please check your local waste separation rules! Another suggestion: bury CAPEBAG in soil (e.g. large house or balcony plant pot) and have some patience - it takes time, but not centuries. We are curious to hear about your experiences. 	Detox Design Dialogues: &#38;nbsp;Circularity in Practice!&#38;nbsp;

Bioplastics do not exist?
Yes, they do exist and here is why!
“Bioplastics do not exist”, has become a popular notion. Designer Verena Michels says: “Let’s refocus the public debate! There are different types of bioplastics. And some are indeed circular”.&#38;nbsp; by Christian Busch

Misleading claims on bioplastics

Christian:

Just recently a book has caught our attention: “Climate-friendly from A-Z”. It rates the climate impact of commodities, and it also briefly talks about bioplastics.

Verena:

Indeed, the book contains a lot of crisp messages. However, at least one of those is too simplistic to my liking and misleading: “Bioplastics do not exist”.

Christian:

I was curious to know as to whether media outlets amplified this claim. A quick Google search shows that Blick, a newspaper in Switzerland, did so.

Bioplastics in the fashion industry

Verena:

Yes, regardless of the mentioned publications, I frequently come across similar resentments. Often it evokes a feeling of “material cancel culture” to me, because I am missing a balanced debate. Of course, bioplastics exist, but we have to talk about the term itself. There are four different categories&#38;nbsp; and all of them have different characteristics. Weather Underground has a focus only on biobased and&#38;nbsp;biodegradable plastics - especially those which have been used exclusively in the agricultural sector so far.

From my personal point of view, and for the fashion sector, I find plant-based materials relevant and wish their potential can fully unfold in the future. In my use case for sophisticated, sustainable rainwear, the absence of toxic additives is relevant, since customers are wearing my product, CAPEBAG, on their skin.&#38;nbsp;

I focus on 100% compostable plastics. That is why I decided to use bioplastic sheets which have been available in the agricultural sector for a while now. Adopting an existing material and transferring it to the fashion sector - with customised parameters and thereby enhanced performance - reflects my approach on sustainable innovation. Also from a cost-efficient point of view, I was happy to adapt compostable sheets from the bio farming sector. The material has already been tested and certified by TÜV Austria.

Decomposition of bioplastics

Christian:

What do you think is the greatest concern about bioplastics?

Verena:

I often hear that bioplastics -in general- would not decompose very well. In fact, one cannot say this about all types of bioplastics. Some materials are biobased, but not biodegradable and not even meant to be. Others are proven to be compostable under certified conditions. Some do really break down in water!&#38;nbsp; It always depends on the application. In the case of compostable, waterproof rainwear, it would not make sense to work with a material which is certified to biodegrade in water, would it? I use a material which decomposes within 12 weeks in an industrial compost system. Moreover, it takes under a year for decomposition in soil (according to TÜV Austria, and in line with European regulations).&#38;nbsp;

Bioplastics exist in different shapes, with varying parameters, and certificates. Some are sourced locally, others shipped from far away. I think that the public discussion should focus more on the point of how we define bioplastics and which durable, yet biodegradable product innovations can arise and make day-to-day life pleasant and practical.

Detox Design Dialogues: &#38;nbsp;Circularity in Practice!Why do bioplastics decompose in Amsterdam, but not in Berlin?
Let's turn our attention to waste cycles. “Bioplastics are not suitable for industrial waste systems”, claims Berlin’s public waste company. “Bioplastics certified EN13432 decompose in industrial waste systems, but the waste cycle has to be long enough“, says designer Verena and she gives us more insights.&#38;nbsp;by Christian Busch

How would you define an ideal circular waste system?
Verena:

It is one which does not have different regulations in each federal state! I would wish for waste disposal companies to adopt a real circular mindset when it comes to the question ‘How do we deal with waste?`. Instead of seemingly making waste “disappear” by burning it, our aim should be to identify and use remains as food for nurturing the ecosystem. To be fair, this process needs to start when designing a product.

Germans love recycling rituals. However, only 30-40% of the yellow bin content is officially recycled (1/3 of these are shipped abroad and another third is not clean enough to be recycled and / or not made of mono material).

The length of waste cycles is important

Since we are talking about circularity, Berlin’s municipal waste disposal company (Berliner Stadtreinigung, BSR) is openly opposing the use of compostable bioplastics bags. The company insinuates that bioplastic bags do not decompose properly, while certified material is proven to be compostable in industrial systems within 12 weeks.

Recently, a study has confirmed that EN13432 certified bioplastic products decompose within (a maximum of) 22 days in industrial waste systems.
It looks like Berlin’s industrial compost cycle is designed rather time-efficient.&#38;nbsp;
 It seems to be uncompatible with bioplastics, because the allowed time span is shorter.

Decomposition of bioplastics
Christian: Are there waste systems in place that allow&#38;nbsp; Bioplastics to decompose?

Waste disposal in the Netherlands is already functioning in a more circular economic way. Disposal companies have established a 12-week waste cycle which allows the decomposition of certified bioplastics. For instance, organic supermarkets like Ekoplaza already use a significant amount of compostable packaging (and also unpackaged food). In other words, the success of compostable plastics in the Netherlands stems from policies that open doors, instead of maintaining walls.

Bioplastic bags could provide some hygiene
Christian:

And what does the current policy in Berlin's waste system mean in terms of bioplastics?

Verena:

Let me put it in a little exaggerated fashion. Currently, certified compostable packaging in Berlin has to be somehow buried in one's own garden or plant pot, because Berlin’s BSR refuses to accept bioplastics in the brown bin. Knowing this, I´ve made sure to work with a supplier of material which is even certified biodegradable in SOIL.

I often hear people say that they find it too scary to even open the brown bin in a communal shared waste system. There are meat and bone leftovers mixed up with plant-based kitchen waste, orange peels, you name it. It does not smell pleasant and has a million flies when opening the lid. Certified bio plastic bin bags would provide hygiene, but as stated before, the material faces some stigma from the waste company.

 What is the material made of?
The water-repellent sheets are derived from the agricultural sector and are made of corn. They are custom produced: thick enough to be of multiple use, yet thin enough to be compostable in a certified time frame.&#38;nbsp;

Will CAPEBAG decompose while in use?&#38;nbsp;The material will show an ageing effect over time. When a seam breaks due to high pressure or pulling, it can be repaired with provided stickers.

How long will it last?&#38;nbsp;The product can last many seasons or even years, when treated gently. When used occasionally, e.g. on your way from and to work and during cultural activities, you can use CAPEBAG approx. 100 times. Or you take it to a music festival, wear it a few days under pouring rain and with intensity. After such heavy use, the rain cape might either be repaired or stay at the festival. And there can be anything inbetween.&#38;nbsp;

What can I do to prolong the life span?&#38;nbsp;Wear and care: do not squeeze. Do not store on heating. Do not pull the arm openings hard, they might rip otherwise. Avoid wearing backpacks over CAPEBAG, better wear them underneath. Hang CAPEBAG up to dry after use. Fold back into bag shape or easily hang it on its handles. Use Repairkit, when needed.&#38;nbsp;
Repairkit?&#38;nbsp;We provide round stickers to fix CAPEBAG on the road. Place one on the broken seam or damaged area, press it, and go.&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="2000" height="1335" width_o="2000" height_o="1335" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4682986e9a9a5d710177dbca4a90236eb3564df43e84090d0a3b08084e85ffb4/20210206_MWEISE_WU_STUDIO-565-R2GO-WEB.jpg" data-mid="105219673" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4682986e9a9a5d710177dbca4a90236eb3564df43e84090d0a3b08084e85ffb4/20210206_MWEISE_WU_STUDIO-565-R2GO-WEB.jpg" /&#62;

How to dispose of CAPEBAG after use?&#38;nbsp;The material is certified compostable in industrial compost and biodegradable in soil. If applicable in your area, you can dispose of CAPEBAG in the organic waste bin. Please check your local waste separation rules! Another suggestion: burry it in soil (e.g. large house or balcony plant pot) and have some patience- it takes time, but not centuries. We are curious to hear about your experiences. Email to info@weatherunderground.de
Where does the material come from?&#38;nbsp;The biodegradable sheets are made by a packaging film company in Germany.

Who manufactures CAPEBAG?&#38;nbsp;A packaging family business in Thuringia, Germany, who, thanks to their expertise and creativity is a key partner now.&#38;nbsp;

What is the material certification about?&#38;nbsp;The material is certified OK biodegradable in SOIL and OK compost Industrial (EN13432 and EN14995)- by TÜV Austria.

Can I return CAPEBAG?&#38;nbsp;Kindly&#38;nbsp;notify us directly in case of any problem or a quality issue. Please consider the environment, when you decide wether to return a purchase and therefore ship it again.&#38;nbsp;

Where do you ship to?&#38;nbsp;We ship within Germany and Europe. If your country is not listed during checkout, please contact us directly. We are happy to ship outside Europe, in case of a minimum order of 10 pieces. Order together, ship less.&#38;nbsp;
How do you package?&#38;nbsp;CAPEBAG itself comes wrapped in its tube collar with handles and can therefore be purchased without packaging. For shipments, we are working with small cardboard boxes that protect the item from wrinkling and being squeezed.
Why are bio plastics a step forward for fashion?&#38;nbsp;Fashion´s supply chain is oversaturated with synthetic materials and toxic dyes. On top of that, every item is packaged in seperate plastic bags, like no tomorrow. With plant based plastics, we attempt to offer a much better alternative to waterproof, functional garments which are conventionally made of and wrapped in fossil fuel plastics.&#38;nbsp;
What’s the benefit compared to recyclable plastic in current rainwear?&#38;nbsp;Bioplastics are not one kind of material, but there are many kinds- we choose the parametres we find meaningful for functional and stylish products and transfer the best performing, currently available sheets to the sophisticated fashion design sector. Recycling is not a great solution for fashion, as it is commonly not fossil-free and highly mobile microplastics are released during production / while in use / in the laundry etc.&#38;nbsp;

Who is doing this?&#38;nbsp;
Weather Underground is founded by fashion and product designer Verena Michels, who has previous work experience in the fashion and cultural sector. Everything has been pulled together by an extended network of colleagues, experts, supportive friends and business partners.
Special thanks to manufacturer Sven Kral and family. Thanks for tax advise by&#38;nbsp;Stephan Theunissen, input on communications by&#38;nbsp;Christian Busch, our logo by&#38;nbsp;Janina Vöcklinghaus, financial input by Ines Hecker, Andreas Liehmann, Stephan Michels and Andrea Álvarez Menéndez.
Where do you operate?
Weather Underground is a nomadic concept that is currently situated in Berlin.&#38;nbsp;
